"a performative process on the question that animates man in search of divinity...the biblical resonances are rich, his recitation and singing is modulated by a barefoot march , in a prismatic vocal sound."

THE ROCK

An Electronic Rock Pop Gospel

The Rock is a groundbreaking project helmed by theatre director Jared McNeill, inspired by T.S. Eliot's seminal work, "Choruses from 'The Rock'".  This ambitious endeavor seamlessly melds the immersive power of ritualistic theatre with an innovative fusion of original instrumental and electronic music composed by Claudio Scarabottini and Jared McNeill.

At its core, The Rock transports audiences into a captivating realm where ancient rituals and modern technology converge. Drawing from Eliot's rich tapestry of themes exploring faith, society, and existential ponderings, McNeill orchestrates an experiential journey that blurs the boundaries between the tangible and the ethereal. Immersive theatre techniques are utilized to envelop spectators in the very essence of the performance space, transforming them into active participants rather than passive observers. Through carefully curated environments, audiences find themselves transported to otherworldly realms where the boundaries of reality are fluid and permeable.

Central to the experience is the integration of electronic music and new technologies, which serve as a dynamic backdrop to the unfolding narrative. Utilizing mind-provoking soundscapes and visual projections, McNeill crafts an audiovisual landscape that pulsates with energy and intensity, enhancing the emotional resonance of Eliot's poetic verses.

The fusion of traditional theatrical elements with contemporary technology creates a multi-sensory experience that resonates on a deeply visceral level. Audiences are not merely spectators but active collaborators in the creation of meaning, as they navigate the intricate interplay between sound, sight, and symbolism. In The Rock, Jared McNeill invites audiences to embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and introspection. Through a synthesis of ancient ritual, immersive theatre, and innovative technology, he crafts a mesmerizing exploration of the human condition that is as thought-provoking as it is visually stunning.

The Rock was born from a 2018 theatrical research led by Jared McNeill and Giovanni Greco hosted by L'Accademia nazionale d'arte drammatica "Silvio D'Amico" entitled Sulla Luce Invisibile which engaged an international group of theatre practitioners from Italy, Germany, and Korea. The research was revived in 2022 as part of the Umbria Factor Festival, produced by ZUT e La Mama Umbria International as part of the Centro Umbria Artistic Residency.

    Not just a performance...

The Rock does not aim to be only a production, but a community.  It's creation has been a result of open workshops, sharings, and community encounters where all are invited to participate to the game, ritual, and creative act.

In November and December of 2023 we were happy to continue our research in the small Umbrian community of Campello Sul Clitunno.

In February of 2024, we were invited to continue our work at Assisi's Piccolo Teatro Degli Instabili.

In March of 2024, we were invited for a 10-day artistic residency sustained by Sardegna Teatro.

In April of 2025, we traveled to the Krušče Creative Center in Slovenia for a 10-day residency sponsored by CultureMoves Europe, funded by the European Union and The Goethe Institute. Check out some highlights here.

In the days before our Spoleto premiere, I sat down to chat with students of the Sezione Audiovisivo-Multimediale Liceo Artistico L, (who also worked to make the projections for our piece!).

What is the essential nature of theatre, and how is it tied to the essential nature of being?

In his “Choruses from 'The Rock'”, T.S. Eliot speaks of “The visible reminder of Invisible Light.”

      Perhaps theatre can be this.

Through Eliot's words, as well as through various exercises and improvisations, we seek to open the field of imagination that ties form, practice, and modern relevance, to that Invisible World, where moments seem to take us, to transcend our intellectual understandings.

We ask "why", and "how", we must be engaged, not only in the work that we do, but also the world that we live in.

We examine theatre as communal passage, its foundations in storytelling and ritual, as well as ancient reverberations of the language of gesture, and monument.

We discuss the differences between Reality, and Truth.

Finally, we seek to approach these questions in ways that maintain the concept of theatre as “invitation”, something which must persistently avoid the hazards of pretension and exclusivity that often plague, and distract from, our search for the “Invisible”.
